A practical budget renovation checklist before you request quotes

Better quotes start with a clearer brief. This checklist helps separate a wish list from work that needs inspection, permits or specialist advice.

  1. Write the outcome in one sentence, such as “make the bathroom easier to clean,” not “replace everything.”
  2. Photograph the existing conditions, including access, services and any damage.
  3. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves so a quote can show options.
  4. List materials or finishes you are considering without assuming they are compatible.
  5. Ask which work requires licensed trades, permits, inspections or building-management approval.
  6. Request the scope, exclusions, allowances, schedule and payment stages in writing.
  7. Keep a contingency for unknown conditions; the right amount depends on the project and professional advice.
Safety boundary: Electrical, gas, plumbing, structural, waterproofing and hazardous-material work should be scoped and performed by qualified professionals under local rules.
